The Biden administration is correct that China has not played fair. But he said the nations that could rival China in shipbuilding are Asian competitors. Shipbuilding subsequently dropped to around five ships per year, which is approximately the current rate of U.S. shipbuilding. President Joe Biden speaks to members of the United Steel Workers Union at the United Steel Workers Headquarters on April 17, 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Biden announced new actions to protect American steel and shipbuilding industries including hiking tariffs on Chinese steel.

Aug 29 (Reuters) - U.S. Steel (X.N) has entered into confidentiality agreements with "numerous third parties" and started to review multiple unsolicited proposals ranging from partial acquisition to an entire buyout, the company said in a letter to its stockholders on Tuesday. Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF.N), which has made a $7.3 billion cash-and-stock offer, last week demanded U.S. Steel to provide the company and the United Steel Workers (USW) union with information about all the proposals it has received so far as a part of its strategic review. Earlier this month, Esmark scraped its bid for U.S. Steel, leaving Arcelor-Mittal as the only known potential challenger to Cleveland-Cliffs. "While we don’t know how long the process will take, the board of directors, management team and outside advisers are moving quickly to complete it," U.S. Steel said in the letter. REUTERS/Lawrence Bryant/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 23 (Reuters) - Privately held steel company Esmark said on Wednesday it would not participate in the purchase process for U.S. Steel Corp (X.N) and respect the position of the United Steel Workers (USW) union, which is supporting Cleveland-Cliffs' (CLF.N) offer. Last week, Esmark made an offer to buy U.S. Steel for $35 per share, or an equity value of $7.8 billion. Esmark's exit leaves Arcelor-Mittal (MT.LU) as the only known potential challenger to Cleveland-Cliffs, which went public with its bid for U.S. Steel earlier in August. However, U.S. Steel last week said its labor agreement with USW does not afford the union the right to veto a sale of the company.

Strong demand for workers has given organized workers a stronger hand at the bargaining table. The United Steel Workers union has asserted itself aggressively in a bidding battle for U.S. Steel (X.N). Corporate profit is 30% above its pre-crisis high, at $2.7 trillion, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. With organized workers showing clout, they’ll be able to pull some more profit their way. Trucking company Yellow filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Aug. 7 after halting operations the week prior.

U.S. Steel says union cannot block company's sale

REUTERS/Quinn Glabicki/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 17 (Reuters) - U.S. Steel (X.N) said on Thursday that its labor agreement with United Steel Workers (USW) does not afford the union the right to veto a sale of the company that may arise from its recently announced strategic review. The union said that "over the years, Cliffs has shown itself to be an outstanding employer to all of its workers." U.S. Steel, which rejected Cliffs' $7.8 billion cash-and-stock offer as inadequate, has said it is exploring "multiple unsolicited proposals". In a regulatory filing, U.S. Steel said its agreement with the union gives it the right to counter with its own acquisition offer for assets covered under their bargaining agreement. If the union does not make an offer its board deems superior, U.S. Steel can sell itself to the bidder of its choosing.

The Democrat-led board in a 3-1 decision said it was reverting back to a decades-old "setting specific" test for determining when workers' abusive conduct is still protected by federal labor law. Lion claimed the worker's conduct was so offensive that the firing was warranted, but the board disagreed and ordered the company to reinstate him. In a statement, NLRB Chair Lauren McFerran said the General Motors decision broke with decades of court precedent and failed to adequately consider the rights of workers. The board since at least the 1970s had analyzed on a case-by-case basis whether offensive conduct made in the course of a workplace dispute is protected. The case is Lion Elastomers LLC, National Labor Relations Board, No.
